This is a buddy’s race car, currently for sale. He wants to trade it to me to put a radiator in his E39, a job that takes an hour and a half, if that. I don’t get it. I really like 944s, as street cars. I know they make fine race cars, but I have absolutely no space, time, money, or justification for this, even to part it out. I gave up trying to play race car driver years ago and will likely never do another trackday. What’s wrong with me? Stef, you want another 944 for cheap? I know a guy...
From the ad:

Is it wierd that he's trying to give it to you, or is it weird that you don't want it? Either way probably yes

I dunno, ‘cause even if you didn’t want to keep it you could easily part it out for $3-5K.

If you don’t have a personal attachemnt to it, just take it for the easy swap and sell it.

I’m sure I can, but I’m not sure how much of the PCV or Evap has been ripped out. Might have to put a stock gas tank back in, and it’ll need a Cat, at least.

I’ll take the car. I’d literally come to wherever you are and just tow it away. Indiana is very lax with laws, so I’d be able to register it as a custom vehicle.

The company on the side is defunct, one sticker is from an also dead local car club, and the others are all contingency stickers, so nobody will care.

Argh I’m halfway tempted to make this happen. My parents live in Fresno and it is tempting to store it there, fly out and tow it back to Michigan.
But...it seems really weird he would just give it away like that if it is any good. Can’t imagine it would be that hard to sell in race circles.

Hey, Fresno’s only a couple of hours away across the Valley... hell, I’ll probably be heading that way at some point over the winter. It’s almost too perfect... Although your screen name indicates you have the same problem I do.

Not hard at all, in the scheme of things. It’s a time/money/space question. I have 2 young children and 2 old and immobile cars in the garage already. I don’t want or need something else to work on. I need less cars in my life.

It’s a bit of a drive, but I could probably do it once my college’s fall break starts on November 24th. Do you have the ability to hold on to it for a while? (unless someone else comes along that is closer, of course)

I could probably stash it briefly at the shop or my mom’s house nearby if need be.

No attachment whatsoever. No interest, either. I don’t have time or space as it is. 5 years ago, I’d have done it already.

Alright, I’ll talk to my parents when they get home and let you know. It’ll be a bit of a trip, but we can probably do it.

Haha yup. Most people believe in having a car that meets all their needs. It seems I always manage to have a car to meet each need.
Summer daily driver
Winter daily driver
Track Car
Truck to pull track car
Restoration project car
Ugh....the struggle is real.

Horses for courses. First world problems, right? I’m in the same boat. Truck for truck stuff, minivan for family, first-car Vanagon that I’m emotionally attached to, 2 resto projects that I’m also attached to (one of which started as a track car project, the other of which is a family heirloom that I was given), and my clunker daily, that in truth needs resto itself. Oh, and my old neglected LeMons car that hasn’t turned a wheel since 2008. I need much, much less of this shit, not more.

Alright, I gave my dad a call and he said that if we can figure out the logistics (renting a trailer/tow vehicle and driving it home) that we can take it. Even if it isn’t any good, I could still use it for parts for my 924.

lol nah for real though, it just seems like a pain in the butt and ain’t nobody got time for it just sitting there in the shop hardly ever getting work done to it or finished up completely to go race it then needing more things afterwards. Anyone that works at a shop usually doesn’t time for all that noise. Let some younger chap buy it and have fun in it all 4 day weekend long. Your buddy knows whats up, he can tell you lol :]

I’m serious, I’m glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t really want a deal like that! You can understand! I’ve done the trackday thing, I work in racing on the side, and I don’t have time for this shit any more. Race cars are a great way to lose a shitload of money, no matter how cheap they seem. If you’re serious about it, there’s at least an hour of work for every 15 minutes the car spends on track.

I can imagine. I’ve never worked on or for racecars/teams but I have built a couple mean R/C cars. For every 30 minutes of serious bashing = up to $100 in parts. Doing the math from 1:16 to 1:1.... nope, all the nopes, every nope ever! Even if it’s a really good LeMons car. The fun factor also multiplies yes, but not enough to justify it for a poor dude like me lol :]

So if I read that correctly, you want me to get the car and store it for you, while you get Andrew to arrange a test truck that you'll tow the car home to Austin with? Good plan. On it!
